If tracking your calories seems overwhelming, you’re not alone, nor is it really fun. There are a lot of apps available that can help you track your calories and macros and if you like those, go for it!
For me, I find I feel good and can enjoy the foods I love and stick within my caloric needs if I stick to 1 serving of fat, 1 serving of protein and 1 serving of carbohydrates plus as many fruits or veggies as I can per meal.
My fist is a serving of carbohydrates.. about 100 calories. 1/2 cup is 60 calories. 1 slice of bread or 1/2 a bun is usually 100 calories.
The size of my palm is a serving of protein (3 oz) about 100 calories.
The tip of my thumb is a serving of fat (butter, oil) about 100 calories.
Most restaurants give you 3-4 times the needed amount. So stick with this basic rule of thumb and you’ll be able to remember your portions and track your calories much easier!
