Advertising Scams

I was emailed this link to a great article about food labels. It talks about many of the issues we discuss in class about label reading. The take home message…DON’T BELIEVE WHAT PACKAGES SAY! Turn it over and read the ingredient list. That is the ONLY way you will really know what is in the product. And, just buy whole foods! Buy apples instead of applesauce or whole wheat bread rather than “whole wheat white” bread (whatever that is!!!). Another good example is the whole wheat Krispie Kreme or the new “whole grain” pop-tart. Just because they use one healthy ingredient (albeit in small amounts) doesn’t take anything away from the fact that they are still laden with calories and saturated fat.

So be smart! Read those labels and don’t trust manufacturers’ claims.
